Old Man’s War sounds great, I’ll definitely be on the look out for it. I agree whole-heartedly with you on Leviathan Wakes – I actually read it this year (and I was already familiar with sci-fi) but it was just fabulous and I’m looking forward to continuing the series.
Great recommendations as usual. Now I have Six Wakes and Leviathan Wakes on my to buy and TBR list. Thank you!
Old Man’s War sounds so interesting!! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of that before! Six Wakes also sounds fantastic 🙂
Long way to a small angry planet sounds like an awesome side story to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. And Mur is great! even though I’ve only listened to the audio podcast she did about superheroes, I think it was called Playing for Keeps.
These are some awesome recommendations, I’m really interested in Fortune’s Pawn and Leviathan Wakes.
I’ve loved what I’ve read of the sci fi genre but haven’t read a ton of it. I have Ready Player One on my shelf – need to read it! Fortune’s Pawn sounds like my kind of book!
Have you read Patrick Ness’ More Than This? Would be interested to hear your thoughts on that one. Great video!!!
I’ve been meaning to read a couple of these books (Old Man’s War, The Martian, and The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet). The other’s sound really interesting, too. And, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Ready Player One (I’m not a gamer or particularly familiar with the 80’s references) – it was a great read.
Great recommendations! I’ll be adding most of these to my list :).
I think I might be the only person who didn’t like Ready Player One. I actually dnf’d it :/. I might need to give it another try. I have Old Man’s War for my kindle. I’ve heard it’s really funny and I loved Redshirts by Scalzi, so I’m sure I’ll like it.
I hadn’t heard of Fortune’s Pawn before. It sounds pretty good. I’m definitely up for an easy-to-understand world since I’ve been having such a hard time getting into sci-fi.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet sounds really good! Have you read much Octavia Butler? While a lot of her work might not be great as an entry into scifi, Kindred definitely would be, it’s one of my favorite books.
Ohhhh Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty sounds like a great book! Thank you for the recommendations – Love ya!
I would recommend Daniel Suarez’s Daemon, Freedom (TM), Influx.
Leviathan Wakes has been on my tbr ever since I first heard you mention it. I even bought it! Still haven’t read it, though, but I’m still so excited to get to it!
I love the Martian. It was the first time I enjoyed a Sci-Fi and now I’m obsessed with everything space.
Yes, Ready Player One!! Cannot wait for that movie!
Old man’s world sounds amazing! I’ll have to check it out.
Ohhhhh, I love a good romance! I’ll check out Fortune’s Pawn!
Great video!!
❤️Nicole
Great recommendations! Loved Ready Player One, The Martian, Old Man’s War and Leviathan Wakes. Still need to read Small Angry Planet and Six Wakes. Fortune’s Pawn is a new one on me. I’ve probably told you this before but you should read Redshirts by Scalzi. That is another one that I recommend for intro Sci Fi.
Thank you for such wonderful, thoughtful suggestions! I’ve been reading and loving science fiction for many years but haven’t actually read any of your recommendations. They all sound fantastic though and your reviews made me insanely curious. I think I’ll get started with Fortune’s Pawn. I love a bit of space opera 🙂 I would love to see more “Where to Start” videos from you, Rachel!
Everytime I go used book shopping I always look for John Scalzi I know you have been enjoying his work! So many other great recommendations! I’ll be adding some to my TBR for sure. Also your new camera really looks great!
This video arrived at the perfect time for me! I’ve always just read literary fiction and historical fiction but the past few months I’ve started dipping my toes into sci-fi, so naturally all of these are going onto my TBR now!
I’m not going to complain that you left out the classics and while I’m a fan boy for p.k.d. and vonnegut it’s nice to hear about things I haven’t heard of
I own most of these on my Kindle so I should probably read them now….
Also, Six Wakes sounds FANTASTIC! I own that one and didn’t even know that it was a sort of science fiction murder mystery lol.
My go to recommendation for people new to sci fi is always Becky Chambers. Such a fun read!
Ooooooo i had never heard of old man’s war!! Sounds fantastic!!! And I loved long way so much!
