Spoiler-Free Book Review: Artemis by Andy Weir

The Martian is one of my all-time favourite books — how does Andy Weir’s new novel stack up to a modern sci-fi classic?

I recieved a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This does not influence my opinion at all. Thank you to Ebury for sending me a copy of this book!

I absolutely loved it too. I’m French, and I’m trying to improve my English (17 y.o.), I read the Martian one or two years ago (my favorite book of all time, really), and I was really waiting for Artemis. The French version will take a while to come, and I didn’t want to wait.
I finished it today, and gosh, this is awesome! Like you, I love the way that Jazz is taking the situations, like her fights with Sanchez in the rover, or alle her vacuum jokes (“I was lying oin the dust with no suit, and it kinda sucked (no vacuum pun intended)”, or “You really suck the air out of the room, you know that?”)
I don’t know if it is at the same level as The Martian, but if it doesn’t, it’s close behind.

The Lawn Gnome says:

My wife is very interested in this one because she adores The Martian.

The Fireblaster says:

The Martian was outstanding! Artemis was horrible. It was boring, mediocre characters. Not exciting, nor is it a page-turner. I was incredibly let down by Artemis. Truly a very bad book, not worthy of anyone’s attention.

Ramix09 says:

Thanks for the video, I wanted to know what was the book about 😛 I think I should read it!

Raul Gomes says:

Great video. You should do more reviews.

Eric Almon says:

Finally, someone positive!

Book Bits says:

I loved this book! I loved Jazz as a badass female character!

Rull Mourn says:

TY, i wish you would read and review DUNE, it is the most widely read sci fi book in the history of sci fi.

destructionsnakepit says:

I agree so much. I finished it around midnight last night and instantly found a way to contact Andy Weir so I could thank him for the amazing book I’d just finished.

Artemis itself felt like a real place. It was so well described, with how it was set up and the physics behind it, that I felt like I’d like to go there myself.

Jazz is one of my favourite characters I have ever read about. She wasn’t the stereotypical female lead and she gave as much attitude back as she got. I miss her already and it’s not even been 10 hours since I stopped reading about her.

Like you I’d happily read more books about Jazz. The book ends with room for a sequel but whether we ever get one I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I’m seeing negative reviews and postings of “rant reviews” on here (yours was the first review I clicked). I’m fully expecting this to be because people wanted another Martian and instead got something completely different. This is unfortunate (if I’m right). The book should be judged on its own merit and not against what came before. I won’t be surprised if certain “sheep” don’t bother reading it or gave up part way through because they were told by other people that they didn’t enjoy it.

Great review, glad I found someone else who loved it as much as I did.

Misty Pal says:

I absolutely LOVED The Martian & I agree almost word to word with this honest review! Artemis is an incredibly entertaining & fun read. It is definitely as a good as the Martian was. 5/5 stars from me too. P.S. Really shocked & sad to hear that its not been fairly well received by some people. I seriously wonder why cz its excellent!

Daniel Kazmer says:

Is Andy Weir the next Michael Crichton (for space)?
