Perdido Street Station is an evocative hybrid of fantasy, science fiction, and horror, with beautiful writing and a gripping story.

My Favorite book.
Oh man, years later and I still see visuals of New Crobuzon all the time as if I just read the book. Something about how Mieville is constantly describing the city throughout the whole novel. It really is a character in its own right. We only get glimpses of it in the following two books but somehow that makes the city and Perdidio Street Station the special experience that it is. Despite how terrible the place is I still find it oddly beautiful. All these cultures just making the best of it under an oppressive government. With one hell of a scary world outside its boundaries.
I love Mieville as you know so very happy to see this review. You mentioned every major point that makes this book great. I should really read something else by him soon, it’s been awhile.
Really enjoyed your review, and you know I enjoyed the book a whole lot too 🙂
This is one I’ve been nervous to get to because it is so long but I will hopefully psych myself up enough to read it soon, great review James!
