HP Lovecraft is known as the mastermind of modern day horror and science fiction. He was influenced but Edgar Allan Poe and authors like Stephen King and Clive Barker are both influenced by Lovecraft. He felt that fear, especially fear of the unknown, was the strongest and oldest human emotion and centered on that in his stories. He had a recurring fantasy that an alien civilization lived under our world and that’s where the Cthulu Mythos comes from. Lovecraft found fame after death with the help of Arkham House Publishers making his work available to a wider audience.
The stories are told in the first person point of view so the reader gets a real sense of immersion in the story. There are recurring themes of elder lore, unnamable creature, insanity, horror, and prehuman worlds. Most stories also have a frightening and/or gruesome twist.
The Cythulu Mythos have inspired many tabletop games, including Mansions of Madness.
