Book Review & Discussion | A Conjuring of Light

Here are my thoughts and feelings of the third book in the Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab! The beginning half is spoiler-free, and then I go into spoilers after. I give warning before going into spoiler thoughts, so don’t worry!

Gaia Steinbuch says:

I agree about the characters being done better in this book. This series was my first (and so far only) experience with V. E. Schwab, I do plan on reading her other books though. I really liked the first book, I was less keen on the second (it seemed like a lot of buildup, I loved the last part but before then it took so long). I really liked the third one.

Spoilers further down.

I agree though about changes in reading taste, mine has been changing lately too so I’m not sure that I would enjoy this series as much if I were to re-read it some time. It makes sense what you’re saying about the writing style.

Spoilers from here on.

I also liked seeing more of Holland in the third book. Amira was great in the third book. I loved seeing Rhy and Kell as children and brothers. I was still hoping we’d find out a bit more about Kell, ie. his parentage and such, but we didn’t get all the answers (perhaps in future books). I also liked Kell, Alucard, Rhy and Lila.

Tiffany Reads says:

I liked A Gathering of Shadows the best, but looking back it’s also the only one I listened to on audio book, and the narrators were the same narrators that do most of Brandon Sanderson’s books. Even if the writing had been tighter and the story better executed, however, Delilah Bard ruined the books for me. She may be my least favorite main female character of all time. Good review!

Nicole Kawa says:

I just can’t get into this one. I’m about 15-20% into it and just can’t finish it. I’m trying hard to finish it for Tome Topple.

the next book in the world is Steel Prince. it’s a graphic novel and I believe it follows Rhys’s father.

What is this book about?

i also found the writing dramatic and i also thought it was because i changed as a reader but i really don’t remember the first two books being this dramatic.

the only characters i liked were holland and rhy and the rest couldve died and i would have not cared. laila felt like a complete different person to me in this book because she was so reckless and selfish in the second book that i found it weird and out of character when she started to care about others. I found the king and queen so annoying and frustrating in the first two book that by the time it came to their pov i didn’t care. alucard was my fav but he kinda became useless and meeeehhhhhh. kel and laila relationship literally the worse imo and totally forced.,,,,
basically i did not like this book and will not be continuing with series
