Oh wow! I’ve never heard of The Fifth Season but it sounds so amazing :O One of my good friends recenty recommended The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and this video is definately making me want to get to that soon. Thanks for all the great recs! <3

Annalisa Moretti says:

I also really recommend the Imperial Radch trilogy by Ann Leckie. Also The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K Le Guin.

Thanks for the video!

Tess Avery Books says:

I am so excited to continue with The Fifth Season series…

Beautiful Books says:

I’m currently reading The Fifth Season and I’m loving it so much. And all of the books sound intriguing.

Addicted2Daydreaming says:

The Apocalypse of Elena Mendoza by Shaun David Hutchinson!! At times it can read a little contemporary but there’s definitely sci-fi/fantasy ingrained in there, plus, fabulous bi protagonist and F/F relationship

Xiomy's Book Tales says:

Will definitely be checking out The Fifth Season!

Kenzie Staley says:

Thank you for this video! I was really searching for more rep in fantasy and Sci-Fi books.

Karen Mae says:

i recommend anything by nalo hopkinson! a queer sff queen!

Kaylarssage says:

The Nevernight Chronicles by Jay Kristoff! Mia is bisexual. The books are definitely not for everyone though.

Alice says:

I added most of these to my tbr (i reaaaally need to read a long way to a small angry planet, it’s the exact kind of thing i’m into).

I recommend this enough to sound like a broken record but More Than Meets The Eye/Lost Light by James Roberts is a rly good lgbt read (and it tends to get overlooked because it’s Transformers)! it’s about a group of people (robots) going on a grand, horrible roadtrip through space to find a place that might not even exist, and all the mishaps along the way. there’s no like, exploration of gender or sexuality in it beyond a single scene (when it’s noted that a character and her wife are trans women) because it’s a generally accepted part of their society that being gay is the norm. and until the end of july the comics are all on sale for pretty good deals!

edit: i feel like i should note that “their society is primarily gay” isn’t lip service- this comic has a bunch of romantic plotlines and all of them have been m/m or f/f (there was going to be an m/f but the writer dropped it due to not wanting one of his female characters to be framed as a romantic interest for a man)

Tilia Häggström says:

Thank you! We defiantly need more representation in SF/F, here are some more for any one interested, they are also some of my favourite books in general:

– A darker shade of magic by V.E Schwab (M/M relationship, and a character who Schwab says ” could very well consider herself non-binary” in the present day but identify as female in the book. I’m also pretty sure the author is either bisexual or lesbian, trigger warning for self harming being a part of the magic system )
-Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson (third book in starlight archive and only a minor character but it’s talked about and some stereotypes about gay man are being talked about. As an added bonus almost all characters have what is described as a middle eastern looks as well, and the people most similar to caucasians are considered to look weird and are always pointed out by other character’s which is a nice change from the typical medieval europe fantasy)
-Mistborn second era by Brandon Sanderson (F/F longterm relationship, you have to read the first era and it’s not one of the main character’s, some stereotypes about “it’s only a phase” being countered). The mist born series also has a species called Kandra, whom I’ve decided are non binary, which is kind of canonical but nor really.
– Brand Sanderson has amped up his representation game in general so I’d say, look out for future books. They are all awesome and all of them are racial divers and very respectful of different cultures and way of life. All the books are awesome so that’s great too.
-The gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue by Mackenzi Lee(M/M romance between the bisexual main character and his best friend who is biracial , historical fiction/fantasy, trigger warning for abuse, it also talked about racial prejudice)
– The Heros of Olympus by Rick Riordan (One of the main character’s are gay, and I think he starts a relationship with a guy in one of Rick later books)
-The Trials of Appollo by Rick Riordan (I haven’t read this one but i’m pretty sure that Apollo is pansexual and Rick Riordan’s books are always great)
-Carry On by Rainbow Rowell (M/M relationship with the main character and another point of view character , the book is getting a sequel where the relationship is probably going to be explored further)
-The raven boys series (M/M romance between two main character’s, trigger warning for parental abuse)

I would love more recommendations if you know any more good books with rep (especially F/F which seems to be rarer than M/M or any of the other more early represented sexualities). I may have missed some trigger warnings so if you have any triggers, you should probably try and find some more complete list.

Extra tip, a lot of greek gods belonged to the LGBTQ+ community even if it wasn’t called that in ancient greek so if you want some historical representation myths are great, even though it’s not always plainly stated. Probably nor only greek gods but I’m not well versed in myth’s form other parts of the world. One example is Ganymede who attracted many men, among others Zeus, who granted him mortality and brought him to Olympus. There are also a lot of speculations regarding the female goddesses, like Athena.

This is, by far, the longest comment I’ve ever written. Probably the most incorrect as well. Please be nice to me.

My fav LGBTQ+ SciFi books are the Pacifica series by Laura Lam and the Kaitan Chronicles series by AdriAnne Strickland and Michael Miller

Shaye208 says:

We Are The Ants By: Shaun David Hutchinson

sandyreadsalot says:

I really enjoyed Every Heart a Doorway and need to continue the series!
The Fifth Season sounds really interesting!

BeautyChemCam says:

I always have to recommend Ann Leckie’s books. It’s hard to find the LGBTQIA+ characters but she tries to write her books in a non-gendered way. So you never know what gender a person is. And I think that’s pretty awesome and also interesting to see how the brain deals with it.

readwithcindy says:

i love fairytale retellings that have a queer twist! have you also read “of fire and stars”?

xreadingsolacex says:

i love these queer sci-fi/fantasy recs!! i totally agree with what you said about there being less diverse sci-fi/fantasy books, which is why i particularly love this recommendations video! (riley, recommending every heart a doorway? i am S H O C K E D)

SFF180 says:

Incredible amount of LGBT+ adult SFF happening in short fiction too. You can read magazines like Uncanny and Strange Horizons on the web for free, and get some exposure to some exceptional stories.

Becca's Book Club says:

Adding all of these to my ever growing TBR!

Dana Cook says:
